I met Tamika Mackereth @meeks0.3 in my very first I met Tamika Mackereth @meeks0.3 in my very first week after moving to Moonta in Year 6.

She still laughs about the day I introduced myself at basketball training at Moonta Area School. From that moment on, we became close friends and have shared many highs and lows together throughout this lifetime.

This moment in Moonta’s history is something that concerns us both deeply.

Over the years, I’ve absorbed so much passion from Tamika about Moonta and its mining heritage. Her passion for her family, and her deep understanding of her family history, is something I have always admired most about her. It’s a privilege to share a part of her story here.

Tamika’s great-great-grandfather travelled from St Ives to Moonta by boat in 1876. He was a tin miner who later worked in the Moonta Mines. In April 2019, I was lucky enough to travel to St Ives and visit the exact place where her great-great-grandfather boarded for Moonta on ship. When I returned home, Tamika and I reflected on how special it was that I had stood in the very place her relatives had come from before making the long journey to Moonta.

Stories like Tamika’s are why preserving Moonta’s heritage matters so deeply. These places hold the journeys and memories of the families who built this community, and they deserve to be protected and honoured.
After moving to Moonta when my Mum became Principa After moving to Moonta when my Mum became Principal of Moonta Area School in Year 6, I quickly fell in love with the history of the Moonta Mines precinct. The stories, the heritage, and the dedication of the local volunteers who have kept that history alive for decades have always been something I’ve deeply admired. It’s a place that means a lot to so many people in our community.

Because of that connection, I’ve been following closely the recent lockout of volunteers at the Moonta Mines Heritage Site by the National Trust Head Office, and like many locals, I’ve felt a deep sense of concern about what this means for the future of the precinct.

For decades, the Moonta Mines Heritage Site has been run almost entirely by passionate local volunteers. The railway, museum, sweet shop, Miner’s Cottage and History Centre have operated through countless hours of dedication, with profits staying in the community and being reinvested into maintaining and preserving the site. For many volunteers, this has been a true labour of love, carried out with minimal involvement from Head Office.

Without warning, the National Trust Head Office recently announced the closure of the Moonta Mines precinct and suspended the volunteers, with the intention of taking over the operation of the site.

For many in the community, this raises important questions about local ownership of heritage, the value of volunteer contribution, and how decisions that affect regional communities are made. Places like the Moonta
Mines precinct are more than just tourist attractions - they are part of our shared story 🫶🏻

@karapilates_ reminds us that for some people, the @karapilates_ reminds us that for some people, the answers come while moving, walking, breathing, and being outside.
